Vehicles 1999 & Older
Smog check for vehicles from 1999 and older includes a tailpipe emissions test, which measures pollutants directly from the exhaust while the vehicle runs on a dynamometer. Additionally, the inspection involves a visual check of emissions control components to confirm they are present and unaltered. For vehicles from 1995 and older, the test may also include a functional check of the ignition timing (if applicable) and an evaporative emissions (EVAP) test to check for fuel vapor leaks. If any standards are not met, repairs will be necessary for the vehicle to pass the smog check.
